How To Make Your Self Tan *Actually* Last

I have been told so many times by girls that they hate self-tanning because it doesn’t “work” on them and so therefore they continue going to the tanning bed. It is 2021, the tanning beds should not even exist anymore!!!!! I had my fair share of tanning bed experiences in high school, and after being so burned after one random 15-minute session before prom, I have never been back since. I was always on the “oh it can’t be that bad for you” train but after this burn, omg I was so done going there.

Don’t get me wrong, if there’s like a major event I’ll still go get an airbrush tan every once and a while, but even that is super rare for me now. I actually love self tanning and I think that if you actually do all of the pre and post steps, it will totally work for anyone. I’ve tried a couple diff ways of prepping and caring for my self tans, but here’s what finally worked for me –

Step One – shave. If you don’t shave before you self tan, you’ve already failed the entire thing, just being honest. You have have have to shave.

Step Two – exfoliate. Not just like oh I slapped on this sugar scrub, like really exfoliate and do a full-body literal massage of it in the shower. My fave scrubs are the Herbivore Coco Rose Exfoliating Body Scrub, which smells incredibleeee and is full of virgin coco oil and moroccan rose – ugh love. & also the Drunk Elephant Sugared Koffie Almond Milk Body Scrub. Yes, it is as amazing as it sounds and it’s infused with their signature marula oil too!

Step Three – make sure you’re dry. NOT damp, dry!! This is where a lot of people go wrong and they put the self tanner on before their completely dry and wonder why they streak.

Step Four – apply. I personally do not like tanning mousses or sprays. I am a cream kind of girl and I seriously only use one kind. Like I will not use any other self-tanner because this one is so bomb and nothing compares to it or even comes close in my opinion! I am obsessed with the +Lux Unfiltered No. 32 Hydrating Gradual Self-Tanning Cream. This is gradual, so you won’t wake up with a wild tan, but def more of a natural glow, which is what I aim for anyway. It’s infused with shea and cocoa butter and passion fruit oil and has a light rosewood scent that is just to die. I use my hands to apply this and I make sure to do an even coat everywhere. It’s so easy to apply and does not feel sticky in the slightest which is the best part. It honestly just feels like a super hydrating lotion!

Step Five – stay on top of it. This is another part where a lot of people go wrong. People apply self-tan once, maybe twice, and then it comes off and they’re like what happened?? You have to be consistent. I try to tan every other night or 3x a week. That’s one part of it. The other part is on the nights that you aren’t applying the self-tanner, you need to be applying some kind of hydrating lotion so that the tan stays active and on! For this, I am obsessed with using the Summer Fridays Summer Skin Nourishing Body Lotion. I find that this lotion really helps my tan stay. There are def toxic lotions out there that will hurt your tan more than help it, so I would stick to more cleanly formulated lotions if you can!

If you can stick with doing these five things, I proooomise you, your tan will stay and you will be glowy and tan. The other great thing about the +Lux Unfiltered tanner is that since it is gradual and is a cream, if you decide to stop self tanning or take a longer break or whatever, this one really doesn’t streak or show in any obvious ways when it’s coming off.
